According to the latest data released by the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), global primary aluminum production reached 6.08 million tonnes in September. This figure represents a modest year-on-year increase of 0.9% compared to the 6.028 million tonnes recorded in the same month last year. However, on a month-to-month basis, output saw a decrease from August’s total of 6.276 million tonnes.

A more nuanced indicator of supply trends, the daily average production, actually showed a slight improvement. It climbed to 202,700 tonnes in September, up from 202,500 tonnes per day in August. This suggests that while the total monthly output was lower, the underlying daily production rate remained robust, potentially influenced by the varying number of days in each month.

Regional performance was mixed. China, the world’s dominant aluminum producer, saw its estimated output dip to 3.644 million tonnes in September, down from 3.764 million tonnes in August. This pullback is often attributed to operational adjustments, local power management policies, or scheduled maintenance at some smelters. Elsewhere in Asia (excluding China), production also softened, falling to 400,000 tonnes from 412,000 tonnes a month prior.
